Women's Tennis Aims for 2-0 Start to Sun Belt Play

BOONE, N.C. -  Coming off a stellar Sun Belt-opening win against Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, Appalachian State University women's tennis (7-4, 1-0 SBC) looks to end the week at 2-0 in conference play when 
it travels to Jonesboro, Ark. to face Arkansas State (3-4, 0-0) at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the A-State Tennis Complex.

Last Time Out
App State defeated Coastal Carolina, 4-2, in its first Sun Belt match of the season. Appalachian captured the doubles point while coming away with three singles wins. The senior duo of Heidi Swope and Jeannez Daniel recorded a singles and doubles triumph. Swope and María José Zacarias recorded the doubles-clinching point while Daniel and Rebecca Morse improved to 3-1 with their victory. Daniel had her best performance for the Black and Gold after clinching the victory for App in singles. 

Solid Start
After Wednesday's win over CCU, Appalachian has already won more conference matches than last season, while App State has also surpassed last season's road win total. The Mountaineers went 2-5 in road contests (non-neutral) in 2017-19 and are 5-3 away from Boone. 

Sun Belt Leaders
Swope's stellar 9-2 mark in singles play leads the Sun Belt in the No. 6 spot and in overall wins. Swope has set a career high in singles win this season. Sandra Anglesjö and Teodora Sevo's six wins as a tandem is third in the league in overall wins and second among doubles pairings in the No. 2 position. 

Wins Update
App State is 33-30 (.524) on the season in singles with all seven Mountaineers boasting at least three victories. After Swope's nine wins, Sevo is second with five wins, while the next four student-athletes have four wins in  Zacarias, Kate Earnhardt, Daniel, and Morse. Anglesjö has three wins. In doubles, Appalachian is a solid 17-11 (.607) in doubles play. Swope and Zacarias have four wins as a duo, while
Morse/Daniel are 3-1. 

Scouting Arkansas State
Arkansas State has fallen in its last two matches against Lipscomb and most recently Presbyterian, 4-3. The Red Wolves are 15-16 in singles action led by Shelby King, who is 4-2 this season. A-State has fared better in doubles with a 9-8 mark. Shannon O'Brien and King are 4-3 while Anita Detlava/B. Masdevall Masip are second with three victories. 

What's Next
App State will host a pair of conference matches next weekend. The Mountaineers will welcome South Alabama for a 10 a.m. affair in Boone before facing Troy on Sunday at 10 a.m.
