BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (1-1) earned its first win of the season with a convincing 6-1 victory over Western Carolina (0-2) on Sunday afternoon at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers won two of three doubles matches they needed before capturing five of six singles contests.
Highlighting the day was
Kate Earnhardt and
Rebecca Morse, as the pair each posted a singles and doubles win.
Starting out of the gate was
Sandra Anglesjö and
Teodora Sevo, who won their second match in as many contests as a tandem when they dealt Jacy Smith/Alexa Webb a 6-2 defeat. With Appalachian needing one more win to secure the doubles tally, Morse and Earnhardt clinched the point thanks to a 6-2 decision against Lauren McCall/Julia Pezzuco.
Picking up where she left, Earnhardt earned her first collegiate singles win in convincing fashion over McCall, 6-2, 6-1.
María José Zacarias continued the push when she registered a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 win over Smith as the No. 1 in the lineup.
After WCU had registered its first point, seniors
Heidi Swope and Morse collected straight-set wins. Morse clinched the triumph for the Black and Gold with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Carli Deehr. Swope extended Appalachian's lead to 5-1 after she picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win against Taranto.
Ending the day was a marathon of a match that ended in thrilling fashion. Anglesjö fought back from a one-set deficit against Julia Pecuzzo to force a tie-breaker in the third frame. The final set went all the way to a 23-21 finish in Angelsjö's favor.
Appalachian returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 against ETSU at 2 p.m. at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
