BOONE, N.C. - App State women's tennis wrapped up the ITA Regionals hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Mountaineers collected nine victories over the weekend, highlighted by
María José Zacarias' three victories in the B Draws. The
trio of
Kate Earnhardt,
Sandra Anglesjö and
Cassie McLay all won a pair of matches.
Zacarias advanced to the semifinal round in the B Draws, defeating her first two opponents in straight sets from Elon and Gardner-Webb, respectively.
The junior advanced to the next round with a come-from-behind three-set triumph over Bethany Lacey (Presbyterian). Zacarias fell in the semifinals to Michelle Ncube of ECU in a valiant three-set match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
After falling in her first-round match in the same bracket, Anglesjö won back-to-back contests against opponents from Wofford and Winthrop. Both wins came in deciding three-set tiebreaker to 10.
McLay's win was in the first round of the Main Draw, where she dealt SibelTanik (ECU) a 7-6(4) 4-6 6-1 defeat. McLay fell to NC State's LexiKeberle. In addition, she also defeated her counterpart from Clemson
in a comeback victory, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-5). McLay was down 6-1, 5-1 before roaring back in the contest.
Also competing were
Kate Earnhardt and
Teodora Sevo, who partnered up in the doubles draw, narrowly falling to Alexis Franco/Peyton Pesavento of Wake Forest, 8-5. Earnhardt participated in the qualifying draw of singles, suffering a setback to Pierina Imparato (Charlotte). Alle Sanford/Anika Yarlagadda of North Carolina needed a tie-breaking win to defeat McLay/Zacarias in their doubles matchup.
Earnhardt bounced back from her loss in singles to nab wins against Elon and Furman.
App State will conclude the Fall with the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Classic in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. next weekend Nov. 1-3.
