Mountaineers Fall to Wildcats in Season Opener

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis (0-1) fell to a tough Davidson (1-0) squad, 4-3, in the season opener on Saturday afternoon at Deer Valley Racquet Club

The Mountaineers enjoyed some impressive individual performances in their season opener against Davidson. The match was tightly contested despite the setback against the Wildcats, who are coming off a 16-5 mark last season.

App fell in the doubles portion of the contest while capturing three singles victories.

Teodora Sevo had an impressive day with a single and doubles triumph. Sevo and Sandra Anglesjö secured the lone victory for the Mountaineers in doubles play, downing Gabrielle Centenari/Mira Gladstone, 6-0.

Appalachian gained early momentum, but Davidson claimed the last two doubles matches with Jeannez Daniel and Kate Earnhardt and Heidi Swope/María José Zacarias suffering losses.

Zacarias bounced back in her singles match as the first finished in the No. 3 spot, defeating Centenari in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-0. Sevo continued to shine with a 6-2, 6-2 win in singles over Megan Scholvinck, giving App the 2-1 lead.

Davidson tied up the match in the next completed contest. Daniel fell to Alexandra Abele in a matchup of No. 2's.

With the score tied 2-2, the final three singles matches came to the 4, 5 and 6 spots. The visitors won two of those three contests in hard-fought matches. Rebecca Morse fell to Elizabeth Truluck in the fifth spot of the lineup.

Earnhardt showcased a valiant effort against Samantha Armas in her first collegiate match. The redshirt freshman came back from a one-set deficit to tie up and force a third frame. Armas topped Earnhardt by a slim margin of 7-5.

Swope ended the Apps' day on a high note with an impressive triumph over Alyssa Hahn that went to three sets. Swope won the first set and lost the second in a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreak, but fought through for a 6-4 win.

App seeks for a bounce-back victory on Feb. 3 against Western Carolina at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.
