Women's Tennis Starts Fall with Strong Showing in Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Several Appalachian State University women's tennis student-athletes showcased a solid weekend at the Hokie Fall Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech over the weekend. 

The Mountaineers faced the likes of Iowa State, Penn State, VT, Radford and West Virginia, Marshall, James Madison, Georgia Southern, VCU, Delaware , Liberty and Bluefield State. 

App was able to come away with 20 wins across singles and doubles action highlighted by victories against the hosts in VT, Penn State, Iowa State and West Virginia. 

Playing in the same singles flight, Rebecca Morse and Kate Earnhardt made some noise with a combined six wins as Earnhardt finished third in the bracket while Morse bounced back from a day one setback to earn the consolation title. Two of Earnhardt's wins were from Power Five schools in VT and WVU. She defeated Liz Stefancic of Marshall in three sets in her final match. 

Morse started the run with a win over VT's Emily Pence followed by a win against JMU (Emma Petersen) and Iowa State's Margarita Timkova in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 10-8. 

Sandra Anglesjö also finished third in her flight as she started the weekend with wins over Delaware and Iowa State to advance to the semifinal round. She fell to Georgia Southern's Elizabeth Gaines, but came back to defeat Penn State's Gracey Hirsch in straight sets led to the third-place finish. 

María José Zacarias earned a first round victory against Delaware's Caragh Courntey. In the Leadership Flight, Heidi Swope fell in her first first contest but ended the weekend on a high note with back-to-back wins against Taylor Blaylock of Radford and Hannah Daniel of Georgia Southern. Teodora Sevo notched a win under her belt, defeating Madson Ballow from Marshall in a straight-set sweep. 

In doubles play, the tandems of Zacarias/Swope and Jeannez Daniel/Anglesjö both won three matches to advance to the consolation finals. Both duos defeated GASO, Marshall, Delaware and Radford to combine for a 6-2 record over the weekend. 

Earnhardt played with Mendoza of Bluefield and picked up a victory in the consolation rounds.

Appalachian will compete next weekend in the Jimmy Powell Invite hosted by Elon on Oct. 6-7.
