Mountaineers Tripped up at No. 29 High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Facing a hot High Point (7-1) team on Tuesday evening, Appalachian State University men's soccer (5-2-1) fell to the Panthers, 2-0, at Vert Stadium.

App State went up against an HPU squad that came into the week ranked just out of the top 25 at 29th in the nation and had outscored its previous two opponents, 5-1.

The Mountaineers outshot the hosts, 10-9, but HPU held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Appalachian also posted a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

App played right with HPU in the first period outside of a penalty kick Illias Kosmidis that gave the Panthers their first goal of the contest to take a 1-0 lead.  The Mountaineers fired off a pair of shots but none that were on target.

In the second half, Appalachian outshot HPU, 8-5, and posted two shots on goal, one by Marc Frogner in the 73rd minute and later by Camden Holbrook at 84'. However, Keegan Meyer stopped both attempts to keep the Mountaineers scoreless.

Scoring the second goal was Kosmidis in the 48th minute to put HPU up by two scores.

Appalachian will look to bounce back on Saturday against George Mason on the road at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers have yet to lose back-to-back games this season.
