Women's Basketball Seeks Third Straight Win Versus Elon

BOONE, N.C.  - Appalachian State University women's basketball (2-2) hosts Elon (1-2) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Holmes Center in search of its third consecutive victory.

App State outlasted Davidson in an exciting 81-78 victory on the road on Saturday. The Mountaineers turned in 46 points from their bench, including a team-high 17 points by Tierra Wilson and 14 points by Maya Calder. Ashley Polacek hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 21 seconds left in the game with the score tied, 78-78, and the shot clock winding down. Appalachian wouldn't pick up its second win last season until Dec. 16 at Marshall.

What to Watch for
• The bench is averaging 31.5 points over the past two games, including 46 points on 17-29 shooting from the field. App's reserves are outscoring the opponents' second unit, 63-10 in the two wins. App State's bench is shooting 55.8 percent over the stretch. See if the bench can keep it going against Elon.
• Opponents are shooting 47.6 percent against the Phoenix through the first three games. App State is coming off a season-best 46.1 percent from the floor against Davidson. Watch if the Mountaineers can continue to keep the offense rolling on Tuesday.
• Appalachian has won the battle on the glass in all three games with a plus-6 rebounding margin. The Mountaineers are averaging 14.3 offensive rebounds per game, while Elon is allowing teams to grab 14 per contest. Watch if the Black and Gold pick up second-chance opportunities.
• Elon allowed a season-high seven 3-pointers against Duke on Sunday. App has been averaging 7.3 trifectas over the past three contests. See if the Mountaineers can continue to hit from beyond the arc after nailing a season-high 10 treys against Davidson.
• Wilson has adjusted to her new role coming off the bench, averaging a team-high 12.8 points, shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc through the first four games of the season. See if the sophomore can continue to give the Black and Gold a spark. 


Scouting Elon

• Elon is coming off an 81-64 setback to Duke in its most recent matchup on Sunday.
• Lexi Mercer led the team with 19 points, while both Emily Maupin and Ariel Colon each scored 16 points.
• The Phoenix poses all underclassmen with zero seniors, including six freshmen and five sophomores.
• Elon is the third team App will face in the first five games of the campaign that went to the postseason in 2017.
• Mercer leads the team in scoring in 15.0 ppg.
• She is one of four players that are averaging in double figures.
• Colon leads the way in rebounding (7.3 rpg).
• Elon is averaging 25.3 points off of turnovers in its first three games of the season.

Series History

Appalachian is 24-11 all-time against Tuesday's visitors. The Mountaineers and Phoenix face each other for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign. App State has won its past matchups in the Holmes Center against Elon.

What's Next

The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday against Marshall at 2 p.m. inside the Holmes Center.
