ARLINGTON, TEXAS – Tristin Van Ord snatched the silver medal in the women's 10,000-meter race as Appalachian State University women's track and field wrapped up day one action on Friday at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Arlington, Texas.
After competing in three events, the Mountaineers sit fourth with a team score of 15 points with 13 of them coming from the 10,000-meter race. Van Ord cruised across the finish line in 36:41.96 for second and was followed by
Emily Fedders (Beckley, W.V./Woodrow Wilson) in fifth (37: 59.87/pr) and
Kerry Leonard (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) in eighth (38:05.31).
Makaila Roberts (Rural Hall, N.C./Reagan) started the day off with a bang for the Mountaineers in the heptathlon collecting 2,878 points, the second best first-day point total in school history, and sits eighth after the first four events. Roberts posted three personal records on Friday and turned in her best performance in the shot put where she launched over a foot and a half personal best of 34-03.50 (10.45m).
Lastly in the pole vault,
Taylor Drummonds (Boone, N.C./Watauga (East Carolina),
Hannah Emery (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Lakeview) and
Lainey Hunnicutt (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) all cleared 12-0 (3.60m) with Drummonds and Hunnicutt tying for seventh and Emery landing in 10th on jumps.
App State will continue championship competition tomorrow, May 13 at Mavericks Stadium starting with the heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. CT, field events at 12:30 p.m. and the running events at 5 p.m.
