BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State Athletics announced today that Head Football Coach Scott Satterfield and his wife Beth have made a personal financial commitment in support of A Mountaineer Impact, A Drive For Excellence. Their gift will establish the Satterfield Endowed Scholarship Fund in support of athletic scholarships in football and track & field, with preference given to walk-on athletes that have not received scholarship aid.
A Mountaineer Impact, A Drive For Excellence was launched at the beginning of March and is a comprehensive initiative to impact and grow the financial foundation of App State Athletics across all sports and facilities. New video boards at both Kidd Brewer Stadium and the Holmes Convocations Center were a part of the initial announcement two weeks ago. Establishing the Satterfield Endowed Scholarship Fund is something Scott, Beth and their family wanted to do for App State.
“We've always wanted to give back,” Satterfield said. “Obviously, this is a school to which both Beth and I both have strong ties. We love the school and what App has done for us, giving us a great education and allowing us to compete at the highest level. Our hope is that we will inspire more out there that are in a position to give back.”
Satterfield and his wife Beth are both Appalachian State graduates and former athletes. Both were walk-ons at App State in the early 1990s. Satterfield played quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1991-95 and has spent all but three seasons of his coaching career in Boone. He has led Appalachian State to one of the most successful transitions from FCS to FBS in history, including back-to-back bowl wins and the 2016 Sun Belt Championship. He enters as App's head coach this fall and expectations have never been higher for a program that continues to explode. Despite football's success, Satterfield knows it will take a continued commitment for all programs to realize their full potential.
“In order to continue to recruit the best athletes, we have to keep striving to build and create the best possible facilities and environment,” Satterfield added. “The lifeline of all of our programs at App State is recruiting. The things (A Mountaineer Impact) is aiming to accomplish in the future will benefit all sports. It will help us continue to invest in our student-athletes, both in the classroom and on the field.”
A Mountaineer Impact, A Drive For Excellence initiative is a vision of the Appalachian State Athletics department to provide resources for identified funding needs of over $60 million. Comprehensive in nature, the initiative is designed to impact every Mountaineer student-athlete and sports program. A Mountaineer Impact, A Drive for Excellence will construct and enhance athletic facilities, provide critical scholarship support, impact the overall athletic experience for student-athletes and fans, while strengthening campus and community.
