HUNTINGTON, W.Va — Appalachian State University men's soccer dropped the 1-0 decision to Marshall on Saturday afternoon, unable to prevent a goal in the second half by Alex Reyes.
"Well, obviously I'm disappointed with the result," head coach Jason O'Keefe said. "We had a lot of moments in the first half to capitalize and change the outcome of the match but we just couldn't finish those opportunities. We had some more opportunities in the second half but then you're chasing the game on the road and that's really tough. We will regroup and get ready for our first home game on Tuesday against USC Upstate."
The Mountaineers (0-4) dominated possession for much of the first half, outmatching the Thundering Herd (3-2) at the midfield and stopping any attack on the defensive third of the field. App State limited Marshall to one shot on goal in the first half and led in corners for the game 7-6.
Marshall came out in the second half blazing, getting the eventual game-winner just two minutes into the final 45. Daniel Jodah placed a ball forward to Reyes, who put one just out of the reach of goalkeeper Jake Chasteen.
Chasteen played the entire 90 for the Mountaineers between the frames, recording three saves on the day.
Leading Appalachian on the offensive side was senior Jordan Melia who had three total shots and one on goal. Stephen Chapman had one shot on goal while Thibaut Arpinon finished with one shot.
Next the Mountaineers will host their home-opener after an extensive road trip to begin the 2016 season. The Apps take on USC Upstate on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
