Apps Set for NCAA Wrestling Championship

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University wrestling will send four Mountaineers to the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship in New York City hosted at Madison Square Garden. Matches start Thursday at noon and go through Saturday night.

The Mountaineers have two wrestlers returning to the NCAA Championship for their second appearance in Michael Longo and Denzel Dejournette. App State's other two NCAA qualifiers, Nick Kee and Forrest Przybysz, will be making their first career appearances.

Longo will get the Apps started on Thursday when he takes on Zach Finesilver of Duke in the 141-pound pigtail match that is scheduled as the third bout of the championship. Longo dropped a close 7-6 decision to Finesilver when Duke traveled to Boone during the regular season.

Next up for Appalachian, Przybysz will wrestle the No. 7 seed of the 165-pound bracket Anthony Perrotti of Rutgers in bout No. 103 . Perrotti finished the season at 21-4 with a 8-1 record in the Big Ten.

Kee received a No. 14 seed in the 174-pound bracket. Kee will face Jonathan Schleifer of Princeton in bout 116. Schleifer is making his second NCAA appearance and went 21-9 this season.

The highest seeded Mountaineer is No. 6 seed Dejournette. Dejournette will start his tournament in bout 166 against Brooks Black of Illinois. Dejournette faced Black last season in the Road Runner Open final and pinned him at the 5:48 mark.

On Thursday, starting at noon, all the action from Madison Square Garden can be viewed on WatchESPN and ESPN3. The final matches on Saturday will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN.
