Mountaineers Place Fifth at Cape Fear National

LELAND, N.C. — Appalachian State University men's golf completed the final round of the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon. The Mountaineers shot an even-par third round 288 and finished in fifth place with a tournament total of 900. The 288 score was tied for the lowest team score in round three.

Duke claimed the 2016 Cape Fear National Intercollegiate title with a total of 857. UNCW was the runner-up at 871. The Seahawks featured the Individual champion, Patrick Cover, who shot a 208 over three rounds.

Caleb Keck shot even-par 72 for the second time in the tournament in round three and finished in a tie for 14th place. Alex Burris carded the lowest round of the tournament for the Mountaineers with a 3-under 69. Burris jumped 21 spots into 19th place.

Chance Watson posted a 74 on day two for a total of 224 for the tournament. Watson placed tied for 25th. Patrick Moriarty shot his lowest round of the tournament with a round three 73. Moriarty finished tied for 41st. 

Jake Smith recorded a 79 in his final round for a total of 235. Smith tied for 53rd place.

The Mountaineers posted day-one rounds of 303 and 309 for a total of 612 and sat in sixth place going into the final round on Monday. 

Keck led the way for the Mountaineers in the first round score of even-par 72 followed by a second round 77. Keck was for 17th place heading into the final 18 holes. Watson carded a second-round low for the Mountaineers with his75. Watson shot 78 in the opening round for a total of 153 and was in a tie for 28th place.

Burris shot a 155 over two rounds with scores of 76 and 79. Burris started the final round in a tie for 40th place. Smith finished one shot behind Burris with a total of 156. Smith carded back-to-back rounds of 78 and was tied for 44th place.

Rounding out the Mountaineer lineup, Moriarty shot 77 in round one followed by 81 in round two. Moriarty was tied for 54th place. 

Competing as individuals, Thomas Hodges and Kyle Austin shot 233 and 245, respectively. Hodges finished tied for 47th while Austin place 75th

The Mountaineers will be back on the golf course on Mar. 20 for the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va.
