BOONE, N.C. - After having last week off, Appalachian State University women's tennis (2-3) will have a home match at the Yonahlossee Tennis Club against Emory (7-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday before traveling to Cullowhee, N.C. on Sunday for a 2 p.m. affair against Western Carolina (4-2) at Catamount Tennis Complex.
After having two weeks off, the Apps are ready to go for their third and fourth straight victories this weekend. Appalachian has won their last two contests over Radford (4-1) and UNC Asheville (4-3) after starting the season 0-3.
Against the Highlanders in the most recent win, the duo of
Mackenzie LaSure and
Taylor Bygrave won their second match of the season in the No. 3 slot before
Clare Cox and
Heidi Swope picked up the doubles point as the No. 1 tandem. Appalachian won the first three singles matches to pick up the win, with
Cox picking up a win at the one spot before
Melissa Machado recorded a triumph as the No. 3, followed by Swope's win that clinched the win for the Mountaineers.
Six different student-athletes have at least one win in singles play while LaSure/Bygrave lead the team in doubles play with a pair of wins. App State is 2-1 this season, as both victories have came at home.
Scouting Emory (7-1)Emory comes in with a solid record while riding a four-match win streak with a combined score of 30-6. The Eagles are 2-1 on the road and 4-1 overall incuding neutral site matches. Emory has had recent success in the past advancing to two consecutive National Championships, winning one in 2014. The Eagles have impressive records from Taylor Cosme, who is 15-3 overall while Madison Gordon and Bridget Harding both have 10 wins under their belt.
Scouting Western Carolina (4-2)The Catamounts have won two of their last three matches and have a match today against USC Upstate. WCU is 1-0 at home with the victory coming against Longwood on Feb. 12. Savannah Taranto leads the Catamounts in singles play with a 4-1 record, winning her last four matches primarily at the four spot. The duo of Shannon Bettiol/Stacia Kissell lead the doubles squad with a 4-1 mark while WCU is 10-4 (.714) in doubles action. App State has dominated the past three matchups against the Catamounts, winning by a combined score of 20-1.
App State will return to action next Friday at Yonahlossee Tennis Club against USC Upstate at 2 p.m.
