Apps Place Four Top 10 Finishes at Hokie Open

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Appalachian State University wrestling competed in its first tournament of the season on Sunday at the Hokie Open. The Mountaineers placed four wrestlers in the top four of their weight classes.

The tournament featured two difference brackets, a freshman and sophomore division and an open division. 

The Mountaineers were led by freshman Colby Smith who won out the freshman and sophomore division at 133 pounds. Sophomore Matt Zovistoski took home second place at 149 pounds, senior Vito Pasone finished third at the 125-pound weight class, while junior Forrest Przybysz placed fourth at 165 pounds.

Smith defeated Carl Antrassian of Maryland in his opening match and then recorded major decisions over D. Bunch of Emmanuel College and Kelan McKenna of Notre Dame to advance to advance to the semifinals. He then won a 9-8 decision over Tariq Wilson of NC State to advance to the finals where he defeated David Bravery of Notre Dame 4-0 to win the division at 133 pounds.

Zovistoski used two decision victories over North Carolina's Troy Heilmann and Princeton's Max Rogers to advance to the quarterfinals where he defeated Ty Buckiso of The Citadel on a 6-5 decision. Zovistoski then won over Edinboro's Pat Lugo to advance to the final round where he fell to Maryland's Baby J. Bannister 6-4 to finish in second place.

Pasone won his first matchup against Campbell's Collin Stewart by forfeit before winning a 6-1 decision over Old Dominion's Steve Simpson. Pasone fell in the semifinal round against Rider's JR Wert, falling to the third place matchup where he won a 17-12 decision over Notre Dame's Ivan McClay.

Przybysz started out the day getting a 16-1 technical fall victory over The Citadel's Jason Carr before defeating Virginia Tech's David Bergida to advance to the quarterfinals. He then won an 8-4 decision over Army's Andrew Mendel before falling to Rider's Chad Walsh in the semifinals. Przybysz fell in the third-place match against Edinboro's Austin Matthews in an 8-2 decision, finishing fourth in the weight class.

The Mountaineers are back in action when they return Saturday, Nov. 12 for the annual Mountaineer Duals as Appalachian State plays host to Belmont Abbey and Oregon State. The action begins at noon.
