App State Falls to No. 4 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (0-1) suffered a 7-0 setback in the season opener to the No.4-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (2-0) Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

The Apps couldn't pickup the set in the defeat, as UNC has five players ranked in the top 100 including the No. 6-ranked player in the country in Hayley Carter.

In singles competition, Clare Cox fell to Carter 6-0,6-0 in the one slot while Melissa Machado fell to No. 68 Jessie Aney, 6-0, 6-1, at the two position. Mackenzie LaSure was topped by Kate Vialle 6-0, 6-0 and Gabrielle Wreder suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback to Chloe Oulllet-Pizer in a matchup between No. 3's.

Heidi Swope fought valiantly in a 6-3,7-5 decision to Cassandra Vazquez at the No. 5, while Taylor Bygrave (No. 6) was topped by Maggie Kane, 6-0,6-2.

During doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Cox and LaSure fell to Aney and Vialle, who went into the match the 16th-ranked doubles team in the nation. LaSure and Knors were partnered in the two position and suffered a 6-0 loss to Carter/Vazquez.

At No. 3 doubles, Swope and Remi Andre's match against Ashley Dai/Oullet-Pizer went unfinished. The trio of Swope, Bygrave and Knors saw their first action in the spring schedule as freshmen.

The Apps return to action next Saturday in their home opener against College of Charleston with the first serve set for 10:00 a.m.
