Men's Soccer Wins in Double OT vs. Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  Appalachian State University men's soccer won in overtime for the second time in as many games on Sunday as it defeated Lipscomb, 1-0.

The Mountaineers (3-1) were held scoreless through regulation and the first overtime period by Bisons (1-4) until Alex Herbst's penalty kick sealed the victory.

"I couldn't be happier with this weekend. Three games in five days and to get all three wins is special, said head coach Matt Nelson. "We controlled the majority of this game and I thought our work rate was spectacular. Now we get to come back home and use the support from our fans to help us get our next win."

The Apps got off to a quick start, tallying nine shots in the first half with Stephen Chapman, Ian Bennett, and Keegan Tanaka all recording a shot on goal.

The Mountaineers had chances in the second half with eight shots and two on goal, but the whistle blew with the score level at the end of regulation.

With less than three minutes left in the second overtime, Austin Stamey turned a defender and was tripped up in the penalty box. The official pointed at the spot, giving App State an opportunity to score the golden goal.

Herbst stepped up to take the penalty kick and would not be denied the game-winner and first goal of his senior season.

Jake Chasteen got his first start of the year in goal. Chasteen made three saves and recorded his first career shutout.

App State returns home on Tuesday to take on Longwood at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
