BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's cross country runner Emily Fedders was one of 10 incoming freshmen to be named to the 2015 Class of Chancellor's Scholars on Wednesday, as announced by the university.
"I am very proud of her," said Fedders' head coach, Michael Curcio. "One of the biggest reasons we recruited her was because I felt her academic interests could really be fulfilled here. Over the years, we've had a few of our cross country and track and field athletes receive this honor, but it had been a few years since the last one."
Those who receive the Chancellor's Scholarship at App State are given a full ride academically for their freshman year. The honor is designed for students with ambitious academic goals involving graduate or professional post-baccalaureate degrees. This honor is Appalachian's oldest competitive, merit-based full scholarship.
Among many other benefits, the scholarship recipients are admitted to the university's Honors College where they will participate in small, difficult classes and produce original research like writing an honors thesis. The scholars are also provided with study-abroad opportunities beginning in their freshman year, and classroom and experiential research opportunities.
This incoming class will study in Dublin, Ireland for five days in October as part of an honors course they will be enrolled in for the fall semester.
"She could have gone just about anywhere she wanted, so to have someone as talented and as bright as her is pretty special," Curcio added. "She was a state runner-up in the 1600 and 3200 so that says a lot about what App State has to offer student-athletes."
