BOONE, N.C. — For the first time since preseason practices began 10 days ago, Appalachian State University football was forced indoors by inclement weather on Friday.
Friday's practice began at Kidd Brewer Stadium but was moved to the Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility early in the session due to lightning in the area. Thanks to the Sofield Facility, the Mountaineers were able to continue practice while a severe thunderstorm rolled through campus, holding the majority of its two-hour workout indoors before moving back outside after the storm passed.
With an intrasquad scrimmage on tap for Saturday, App State wore helmets and shoulder pads for Friday's practice and contact was limited. However, after getting Thursday afternoon off to attend a movie, Friday's workout featured high energy and plenty of 11-on-11 work.
Although still recovering from an injury that held him out of spring practice, junior-college transfer
Mondo Williams continued to impress with his play on Friday. During full-team drills, Williams consistently had great coverage on Appalachian's talented first-team receivers and finished with a handful of pass breakups.
The Mountaineers' pass rush was also impressive on Friday, as they recorded four sacks in 16 third-down-and-seven plays during one particular period. Seniors
Thomas Bronson and
Osvaldo Sombo, juniors
Stephen Burns and
Antonious Sims and freshmen
Teh'Ron Fuller and
Chris Favoroso were all in on the sacks.
Offensively, the Mountaineers picked up five first downs during the third-and-seven situations, highlighted by long runs by senior
Ricky Fergerson and redshirt freshman
Jalin Moore and a pretty pass and catch from sophomore
Taylor Lamb to senior
Bobo Beathard.
Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage is not open to the public but a full recap and statistics will be posted Saturday evening at
