DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite losing the doubles point, Appalachian State University women's tennis was able to overcome an early deficit as it capped off the regular season with a 4-3 win at longtime rival Davidson on Saturday.
The Mountaineers (9-14) fell behind early as the Wildcats (11-9) swept the doubles portion of the match, but Appalachian roared back with four singles wins to end the regular season on a high note.
Davidson was able to grab early momentum when it earned the point in an extremely competitive doubles competition. The Wildcats grabbed an 8-7 win at No. 1, an 8-6 victory at No. 2 and an 8-5 win at No. 3 to take a 1-0 lead.
However, Appalachian State would rebound thanks to wins at No. 1 and Nos. 4-6 singles. Clare Cox grabbed a point for the Mountaineers with her 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 1 to tie the contest.
The Wildcats responded with back-to-back wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to take a commanding 3-1 lead, but Appalachian was able to turn the tide, starting with Megan Mullen's 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6.
In a pair of thrilling, three-set contests, Appalachian State was able to come out on top as Brianna Armellino won at No. 4 (3-6, 7-6, 6-2) before Melissa Machado clinched the contest with a victory at No. 5 (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).
The Mountaineers finish the regular season with three players who have won at least 10 singles contests. Cox leads the team with an individual record of 14-8 while Machado and Gabrielle Wreder have each earned 11 victories.
Appalachian State will head to New Orleans next week for the Sun Belt Conference Championships, which will be played from April 16-19. The winning team will earn an automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
