CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite another singles win by Clare Cox at No. 1 and a victory by Gabrielle Wreder at No. 5 singles, Appalachian State University women's tennis was unable to overcome a strong performance by previously winless College of Charleston in a 5-2 loss on Sunday.
The Mountaineers (6-6) dropped their third match of the week while the Cougars (1-8) were finally able to get into the win column.
CofC grabbed early momentum in doubles play as it cruised to wins at the No. 1 (6-0) and No. 2 (6-1) spots to earn the first point of the match.
The Cougars were able to ride that wave into singles play, where they captured four-straight singles victories to clinch the match. Mackenzie LaSure put up the best fight in a losing effort as she battled back from a first-set loss to force a third set, but ultimately fell by a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 final.
Cox, who improved her season record to 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, came away with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win to extend her individual win streak to five matches. Wreder improved to 5-6 on the year with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 position.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday when they take on St. Joseph's in a neutral-site contest in Charlotte.
