GREENSBORO, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis dropped the doubles point and lost three singles contests as it fell to UNCG, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Mountaineers (6-12) dropped their ninth-straight contest as the Spartans (6-7) seized early momentum in doubles play and took care of business in the singles portion of the match.
UNCG used 8-5 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, along with an 8-4 win at No. 3, to stake itself to an early 1-0 lead.
The Spartans grabbed wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to take a commanding 3-0 lead later in the match, but Appalachian would storm back to tie things up.
Clare Cox earned her 12th singles win of the year with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win at No. 1. Gabrielle Wreder was a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) winner at No. 4 and Melissa Machado tied the contest with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 position.
A three-set thriller would be the deciding factor at No. 6 singles, where UNCG's Jamie Grinberg earned a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Appalachian's McKayla Zupan to clinch the victory for the Spartans.
Appalachian State returns to action tomorrow when it faces former Southern Conference rival Western Carolina on the road.
