CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Clare Cox picked up her 11th singles win of the season, but Appalachian State University women's tennis was unable to score another point as it fell by a 6-1 final to Charlotte on Thursday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
The Mountaineers (6-11) dropped their eighth-straight contest as the 49ers (7-8) grabbed the doubles point and won in straight sets at five of six singles spots.
Cox teamed with Mackenzie LaSure to pick up a hard-fought, 8-7 (9-7) win at No. 1 doubles, but Charlotte grabbed an 8-6 win at No. 2 and an 8-4 win at No. 3 to grab the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Cox improved to 11-6 on the season as she grabbed a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot. LaSure suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss at No. 2 and Brianna Armellino was topped by a 6-2, 6-2 score at No. 3.
Gabrielle Wreder dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 4 while McKayla Zupan fell by a 6-2, 6-1 score at the No. 6 position. Melissa Machado put up a solid effort at No. 5, but was unable to grab the win as she lost by a score of 7-5, 6-4.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday when they square off with UNCG before traveling to Western Carolina on Sunday.
