GREENVILLE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis fell to in-state rival East Carolina by a 7-0 final on Saturday at ECU's River Birch Tennis Center.
The Mountaineers (2-3) fell behind early when the Pirates (1-1) earned the doubles point and were unable to rebound in singles play despit several hard-fought matches.
ECU earned victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles via scores of 6-0 and 6-3. The App State tandem of Clare Cox and Mackenzie LaSure trailed 5-1 at the No. 1 spot when the doubles point was decided.
In singles play, Cox took her opponent to three sets at No. 1 before finally falling by a 7-6, 6-7, 10-8 score. Brianna Armellino and Gabrielle Wreder also went to three sets at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Armellino fell by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 while Wreder dropped her match by a final of 7-5, 2-6, 10-7. East Carolina earned wins in straight sets at all three of the remaining singles matches to finish out the sweep and grab its first win of the year.
The Mountaineers return to action when they play host to Presbyterian at 2 p.m. on Feb. 14 at Yonahlossee Racquet Club in the first of three-straight home matches.
