Wrestling Receives Top-25 Votes in NWCA Poll

BOONE, N.C. — Riding a Three-match win streak, Appalachian State University wrestling received top-25 votes in the USA Today/ National Wrestling Coaches' Association poll on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers (6-2, 1-0 SoCon) tallied seven points in the poll which is tied with Wisconsin for the highest total in the 'others receiving votes' category. Since 1957 when the NWCA started ranking teams, the Mountaineers have never been ranked in the top-25.

The Black and Gold were last on the road in Clarion, Pa. for a tri-meet with Clarion and Buffalo.

App State made quick work of Clarion winning eight of ten matches and coming away with a 31-6 victory. In the second match, against a Buffalo team that defeated the Mountaineers last season, the Apps edged the MAC opponent, 19-16.

Appalachian started its winning-streak with its biggest win of the season on Dec. 15 at home versus No. 24 Duke. The Apps won the match 26-14.

This season, the Mountaineers have earned Wrestler of the Week honors four times with Denzel Dejournette winning twice and Nick Kee and Forrest Przybysz claiming the honor once.
Dejournette was also named Wrestling Athlete of the Month for November.

App State returns to action at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. on New Year's Day.
