BOONE, N.C — Appalachian State University men's soccer played its final home game of the regular season on Tuesday afternoon against Bowling Green. The Mountaineers gave up a late, second-half goal and fell to the Falcons, 2-1.
"I was happy with the performance again, for the most part. Unfortunately, we gave up another goal on a set piece and it changed the game," said head coach Matt Nelson. "If we can start improving ourselves defensively on set pieces, we can compete with anyone. We are more than capable of making the adjustment and going on a run at the end of our season."
The Mountaineers went down a goal in the 28th minute after a foul gave Bowling Green a free kick. Jacob Roth played a ball into the box that was headed past Paul West.
The Mountaineers immediately put the pressure back on the Falcons with a shot from Stephen Chapman that was saved by Ryan Heuton, the Bowling Green goalkeeper.
A minute later, Chapman drew the Apps level when he volleyed a shot into the back of the net. Chapman was assited by John Walrath. The goal was Chapman's team-leading sixth goal on the year. The assist was Walrath's first of the year.
After coming out of the break tied 1-1, the Apps had a chance to break the tie in the 50th minute. Raheem Somersall headed a cross over the keeper but was saved by a Falcon defender on the goal line.
Bowling Green was pushed in front by Ryan James in the 79th minute. Keaton Reynolds knocked a ball in the box over to James who slotted his shot past West for the game-winning goal.
The Mountaineers will complete their regular season on the road at NJIT on Saturday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
