BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis picked up its second-straight win with a 6-1 victory over visiting Sun Belt Conference foe Arkansas State on Friday at Yonahlossee Racquet Club.

The Mountaineers (2-2) jumped out to an early lead by winning the doubles point, and never looked back as the Red Wolves (0-2) failed to make up enough ground in singles play.

App State's No. 3 duo of McKayla Zupan and Gabrielle Wreder were first to win their doubles match, 6-4, before Arkansas State won at No. 1, 6-3. Melissa Machado and Megan Mullen took No. 2, 6-4, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

In singles play, Appalachian carried the momentum, as Brianna Armellino won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. Clare Cox was also successful in her singles match, winning 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.

The closest match of the day came at No. 2 singles spot. Mackenzie LaSure battled back from an early deficit to win the first set 7-6 in a hard-fought tiebreaker. The second set wouldn't be any easier, but LaSure was able to finish it off, winning 6-2 to give the Mountaineers the match-clinching fourth point.

After a close start at No. 5, Wreder came back to win handily, 7-6, 6-0. The No. 6 came down to a tiebreaker, as Machado lost 3-6, 6-2, 8-10. Mullen finished off the match at No. 6, winning 6-2, 6-4.

The Mountaineers head back out for a brief road trip at East Carolina on Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. They then return home for another three-match homestand starting Feb. 14 against Presbyterian at Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
