BOONE, N.C. – After starting out strong in doubles and early singles matches, Appalachian State University women's tennis dropped its first home match of the spring season to ETSU in a 5-2 loss.
The Mountaineers (0-2) took the doubles point handily, with the No.3 duo of Gabrielle Wreder and McKayla Zupan getting the quick 6-2 win over the Buccaneers. The No. 2 doubles pairing finished next to seal the point as Megan Mullen and Melissa Machado won 6-4, to put Appalachian up 1-0 after doubles play.
Brianna Armellino broke out of the singles gate early, winning the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-0. ETSU then rattled off four wins in a row to secure the match.
Clare Cox dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision at the No. 1 before Mackenzie LaSure fell in a hard-fought three-set match, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4. The Buccaneers took down Machado at the No. 4, 6-2, 6-2 and Wreder lost 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5. Mullen played out the No. 6, but was unable to get the win, losing 6-3, 6-1.
The Mountaineers return to action in part two of their three-match homestand tomorrow against NC A&T. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
