Men's Soccer Falters at Navy on Friday Evening

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Appalachian State University men's soccer fell to the Midshipmen on Friday, losing to Navy by a final score of 5-0.

"We played a very good Navy team tonight and they did an excellent job of putting their chances away," said head coach Matt Nelson. "We need to find a way to be competitive with teams like this that are some of the top teams in the country – that's our ultimate goal. We use this as a learning experience and move on to UMBC on Sunday. These games will make us better come conference play." 

The Mountaineers (0-2-1) were able to tally just four shots all night long compared to Navy's 22. Donovan Japp, Stanley Broaden, Keegan Tanaka and Alex Herbst were credited with shots. 

Navy totaled 10 shots on goal en route to the 5-0 victory. Thomas Shiba put Navy on the board first in the 21st minute on a shot from 12 yards out. Aubrey Jones tallied one in the 28th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. 

Right before halftime, Navy would make it a three score lead after Geoff Fries finished one off of a cross into the box. 

In the second half, Daniel Camuti scored in the 54th minute on a ball served in from the right side to make the score 4-0 in favor of Navy. The Midshipmen would cap its scoring in the 62nd minute when Alex Evans scored off of a tap from Jamie Dubyoski to extend the lead to 5-0.

Paul West started in net and made five saves in the contest. Holland Hammond relieved West for nearly the last 16 minutes. 

The Mountaineers will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Baltimore to face the No. 14 UMBC Retrievers. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
