BOONE, N.C. — The acrobatic, fingertip catch that Appalachian State University football junior wide receiver Simms McElfresh made for an eight-yard touchdown last Saturday at Michigan has gained national recognition as one of the top plays of the first week of college football in 2014.

Among those lauding McElfresh's catch include:

• Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King, who called the McElfresh's grab "one of the greatest catches I have ever seen" in his popular and critcally acclaimed Monday Morning Quarterback column.

• USA Today's Nick Schwartz, who called it the "prettiest touchdown of the weekend."

• NFL.com, which tabbed it as one of the top plays of Week 1 in college football.

McElfresh and the Mountaineers make their 2014 home debut on Saturday night when they host Campbell at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
