Men's Soccer Dominates USC Upstate, 3-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State University men's soccer earned its third win of the season in dominating fashion, 3-1 over USC Upstate on Saturday evening.

"I'm happy with how we worked in the second half," said Matt Nelson. "We created chances in the first half and could not capitalize. We gave another soft goal up on a set piece, but this time we found a way back into the game and created enough opportunities to win it. They worked extremely hard and I'm proud of them to find a way to get this result."

The Mountaineers (3-4-1) found themselves down 1-0 toward the end of the first half in the 38th minute when Taylor Scalera headed in a ball from Calon Minors.

That's where the momentum stopped for the Spartans. After coming out of the half down 1-0, the Mountaineers tied it at 1-1 when Stanley Broaden netted his fourth goal of the season in the 49th minute off of a cross from Donovan Japp into the box.

Broaden would tally his fourth career multi-goal game on an unassisted goal to put the Apps up 2-1 in the 57th minute. The game-winning goal for Broaden was the fifth of his career.

To put the game away for good in the 79th minute, sophomore Keegan Tanaka netted his first career goal wearing the Black and Gold. Freshman Austin Stamey assisted on the goal inside the box and Tanaka put a good left foot on it to score.

Paul West collected four saves in the contest to earn the win. Appalachian led in shots 17-11 and corner kicks 8-3. Broaden and Ben Steen led the Apps in shots with three a piece.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 30 when they travel to Durham, N.C. for a showdown with Atlantic Coast Conference member, Duke. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.
