Broaden and Beranger Earn Sun Belt Awards

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Appalachian State University men's soccer players Stanley Broaden and Alex Beranger earned Sun Belt Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

“Both these guys have worked extremely hard this year and have been great teammates,” said head coach Matt Nelson. “For them to have the week that they did was well deserving. Congratulations to them.”

Broaden, a senior, and Beranger, a junior, each contributed at a high level, helping the Mountaineers post back-to-back shutout victories and back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2012 season. App State dominated Presbyterian on Sept. 12 by a 4-0 final and shutout Marshall on Sept. 15 by a 2-0 score.

Broaden, a Wilmington, N.C. native, earned Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals, including game-winning goals in both games. Broaden scored first against Presbyterian in the 14th minute. Against Marshall, Broaden netted the first of his two goals in the 56th minute and posted his second just a mere six minutes later to propel the Mountaineers.

The multi-goal game against the Herd was Broaden's third of his career, while the game-winning goals were the third and fourth of his career.

Beranger earned Defensive Player of the Week and led a stingy defensive unit against Presbyterian. The Apps allowed just four shots, including one on goal in the match. Originally from Meudon, France, Beranger tallied his first career goal wearing the Black and Gold on a header in the 61st minute off of an Alex Herbst corner kick.

The Mountaineers continue their season on Wednesday, Sept. 24 when they host Radford for a non-conference match. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m. from Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
