HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Senior Stanley Broaden netted his third career multi-goal game on Monday night to lift Appalachian State University men's soccer over Marshall, 2-0. Broaden netted two multi-goal games last season against UNC Asheville (Sept. 6) and ETSU (Sept. 26).
Broaden also has scored the game-winning goal in back-to-back contests after scoring first in the shutout of Presbyterian on Sept. 12.
"To turn around and play on the road three days after our last game and to work as hard as we did and play as well as we did tonight shows how far this has come in the past 10 days," said head coach Matt Nelson. "If you look at the performance, we were very good against a solid Marshall team and it is always great when the result mirrors the performance. I am proud of the team and now we can focus on our next game."
The Mountaineers (2-3-1) have not allowed a goal in the last 180 minutes of play and once again dominated and kept possession in the attacking zone most of the night.
Appalachian got on the board first in the 56th minute when Alex Herbst played a tremendous through ball up the near side to Donovan Japp who was able to set up Broaden with a cross in front of the six-yard box for him to tap in for the early 1-0 lead.
Just six minutes later in the 62nd minute, Broaden tallied his second of the night on a long cross into the box from freshman Cooper Coughlin to extend the lead to 2-0.
App State outshot Marshall 15-7 in the match. Broaden led the Mountaineers in shots with six, including four on goal. Japp and Keegan Tanaka each collected three shots, while Herbst, Coughlin and Trey Hemphill added a shot a piece.
Paul West earned his second clean sheet of the season and the seventh of his career, while making two saves in the contest. West played the majority of the game against Prebyterian and shared the shutout with Holland Hammond last Friday.
The Mountaineers will have some time off before their next match on Wednesday, Sept. 24 against Radford. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. from Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
