BOONE, N.C. – In dominating fashion, the home team scored four goals and Appalachian State University men's soccer notched its first win of 2014 and the 425th in program history with a 4-0 blanking of Presbyterian on Friday night.
"It's nice to be home after a long two weeks on the road," said head coach Matt Nelson. "I thought it was a great team performance and being able to get everybody some game time is good for our young guys. We had some extended spells where we played excellent soccer and then there were times when we let our foot off the pedal. I'm proud of the guys tonight."
The Mountaineers (1-3-1) struck first in the match and early in the 14th minute. Stanley Broaden scored his first goal of the season on a great through ball from Keegan Tanaka to give the Apps an early 1-0 lead.
After going into the half with the 1-0 lead, Appalachian used a 23:32 stretch to score three goals and seemingly put the game out of reach. Alex Beranger was one of three Mountaineers to score their first career goal wearing the Black and Gold.
In the 61st minute Beranger put his head on an Alex Herbst corner kick and placed the ball perfectly in the top right corner to extend the lead to 2-0.
With rain beginning to fall, Jeremy Tshongo netted the first of his career in the 78th minute off of a beautiful assist from Trey Hemphill and shot left corner to put the Apps up 3-0. Then in the 84th minute, Austin Stamey was able to tap in a Herbst cross on the goal line to make it 4-0 in favor of the Mountaineers. Herbst finished with two assists on the night.
Paul West and Holland Hammond combined for the shutout of the Blue Hose on Friday. West only had to make one save in the contest, while playing strong throughout. Hammond was not challenged in his relief of West.
App State dominated in all aspects of the match, including a 17-4 advantage in shots and 7-1 in shots on goal. The Mountaineers managed five corner kicks to the Blue Hose's three.
11 different Mountaineers recorded shots in the contest and were led by both Patrick Harrow and Broaden who tallied three a piece.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Monday, Sept. 15 when they travel to Marshall. Kick off is set for 5 p.m.
