HIGH POINT, N.C. – Appalachian State University men's soccer prevailed over High Point with a last second penalty kick goal from junior Alex Herbst to down High Point, 1-0.
The Mountaineers close the 2014 preseason schedule with a perfect 3-0 record, including the shutout of the Panthers on Saturday evening.
"It's always nice to finish our preseason with a perfect record," said head coach Matt Nelson. "The team worked extremely hard tonight against a very good High Point team and we were able to grind out a great result on the road. We need to realize that come next weekend the games will begin to count, however, we will go into the season with confidence and will do everything we can to build off the past three games."
Alex Herbst was awarded a penalty kick with four seconds remaining in regulation from a handball off of a free kick. The goal for Herbst was his first of the preseason.
Goalkeeper Paul West earned his first clean sheet of the preseason while making five saves and playing the entire game.
Sophomore Stephen Chapman led the Apps with four shots, including one on goal. Donovan Japp and Trey Hemphill both finished with two shots a piece and Herbst, senior Patrick Harrow and freshman Jeremy Tshongo each tallied a shot.
Overall, High Point outshot the Mountaineers 15 to 11 and created four corner kick opportunities to App State's two.
Appalachian will now have a few days before they hit the road to Harrisonburg, Va. for the James Madison Invitational. The Mountaineers will play Albany in their season opener on Friday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m.
