PINEHURST, N.C. — Casey Komline fired a 5-under 67 in the final round of the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Golf Tournament to help the Appalachian State University men's golf team to an eighth-place finish on Tuesday at the par-72, 7,122 yard National Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
After shooting a 310 in the first and second rounds, the Mountaineers fired their best round in the third round of the tournament, carding a 5-over 293. The 293 helped them jump from last place to eighth place in the tournament.
Komline shot a very impressive final round, getting two birdies on his back nine holes after starting on 10. On his front nine holes, Komline got a birdie on hole 2 and 7 before gaining an eagle on hole 8. This was the second time that he gained an eagle on hole 8 in the tournament. Komline finished the tournament tied for 15th place with a 6 over 222.
Caleb Keck had the second-best tournament for Appalachian. He finished with a 14-over 230 for the tournament. One stroke behind him was John Michael Cole who shot a 1-over 73 in the final round to finish tied for 26th place.
Lee Mitchell served as the second to last counting score for Appalachian in the final round after firing a 3-over 75. He completed the tournament in 44th place carding a 20-over 236.
Rounding out the Mountaineers five was Eric Eberspeaker who completed the tournament tied for 45th place.
Georgia Southern shot a 5-over 293 on Tuesday to edge Chattanooga for a one-stroke win. Western Carolina's J.T. Poston, shot an even-par 72 to hold off Chris Robb of Chattanooga for medalist honors.
This was Appalachian's last tournament of the season and will be training to get ready for competitive play in the SunBelt Conference in the fall.
