BOONE, N.C. – After falling behind after two singles matches, Appalachian State University women's tennis rallied for a 5-2 victory over Southern Conference rival Davidson on Saturday at Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
The Mountaineers (5-14, 1-4 SoCon) jumped out to an early lead by winning the doubles point, but the Wildcats (6-14, 1-5) earned straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to snag a 2-1 lead before Appalachian bounced back by winning each of the final four singles matches.
App State rolled in doubles play as the No. 2 tandem of Clare Cox/McKayla Zupan picked up an 8-3 win while the No. 3 team of Brianna Armellino/Megan Mullen won by the same score.
In singles play, LaSure earned a win in a thrilling three-set marathon at the No. 2 spot to tie the match at 2-2 after Davidson had dispatched Appalachian's top two players. After dropping the first set by a 6-1 score, she was able to win the second set 7-5 before cruising to a 6-1 win in the third and decisive set.
Jessica Thaggard followed up with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 while Mullen cruised to a win at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0). Armellino capped off the day with a three-set win at No. 5 (6-3, 6-7, 6-0).
The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Elon at 3 p.m. at the Appalachian Tennis Courts.
