STATESBORO, Ga. – Appalachian State University women's tennis suffered a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern on Sunday at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Mountaineers (4-11, 0-2 SoCon) dropped their fifth-straight match while the Eagles (6-8, 2-4) picked up their second-straight victory.
GSU picked up straight-set wins in five of six singles matches as it swept singles and avoided having to face Appalachian in doubles play.
Mountaineer freshman Olivia Isbey had the best showing of the day as she dropped a hard-fought match at No. 6 singles. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Isbey rallied for a 6-1 win in the second set, but eventually fell by a 10-6 final in the third and final set.
Jessica Thaggard nearly forced a third set in her match at No. 5 before falling by a 6-4, 7-5 final but no other players were able to get any closer. Clare Cox suffered a loss at No. 1 (6-3, 6-4) while Mackenzie LaSure fell at No. 2 (6-0, 6-2). Brianna Armellino was unable to win at No. 3 as she fell by a 6-4, 6-4 final and Gabrielle Wreder rounded out the day with a loss No. 4 (6-2, 6-4).
The Mountaineers return to action when they travel to Chattanooga on Saturday before heading to Furman on March 26. The next home match for Appalachian comes on March 27 at 3 p.m. against UNCG.
