BOONE, N.C.  — Appalachian State University wrestling hosted the North Carolina Tarheels on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Gym. The Mountaineers (1-4) fell in a higly contested match 21-22.

The match started at the 125-pound weight class. Appalachian jumped out to an early lead by winning its first two matches. At 125, Dominic Parisi was dominating UNC's Cody Karns before eventually pinning him at the 4:31 mark.

Vito Pasone followed up with a win of his own at 133, defeating Matt Williams in a 16-11 decision to give App State a 9-0 advantage.

Carolina would fight back winning the next two weight classes. At 141, No. 13 Joey defeated Michael Longo by major decision 17-6, to pull UNC back within five points. No. 19 Chris Barber then gave North Carolina the lead when he earned a hard fought sudden victory pin over Dylan Cottrell in the second overtime period.

With the score at 10-9 in favor of UNC, Zack Strickland won a 3-0 decision over Chris Mears to put Appalachian back on top, 12-10.

Next at 165, Nick Kee gave up a major decision to Ethan Ramos to give the lead back to Carolina. Appalachian then dropped matches at 174 and 184 to extent North Carolina's lead 22-12.

The Mountaineers made it interesting by winning the final two weight classes. At 197, Tyler Radford earned his first dual win of the season when he defeated Chip Ness by a 5-4 decision. Denzel Dejournette pinned Frank Abbondanza at 1:57 to stretch his win streak to 15 and remain undefeated on the year. Dejournette's pin brought the final score to 22-21.

The Mountaineers are back on the mats at Varsity Gym on Friday when they host a tri-dual with Ohio and Belmont Abbey.
