Mountaineers Finish Off Fall Slate

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Oliver Casey, Jack Maddocks and Chris Mahan each earned top-three finishes in their respective flights as Appalachian State University men's tennis capped off it's fall slate at the Winthrop Invitational on Sunday.

Casey finished 3-1 in Flight A, picking up wins over Robert Kjellberg of North Carolina Wesleyan (6-4, 6-4), UNC Asheville's Thomas Panoulas (6-4, 6-4) and Artem Khrapko of Davidson (6-3, 6-3) before falling on the championship match to Winthrop's Tremayne Mitchell (7-5. 6-0).

In Flight B, Maddocks also posted a 3-1 record on the weekend. After winning his first two matches over UAB's Chris Egan (6-4, 6-4) and John Shubel of UNC Asheville (6-2, 6-2), Maddocks was defeated by Presbyterian's Brandon Mills (6-2, 6-2). Despite the loss, he was able to bounce back in the third-place contest with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ernest Alberch of Gardner-Webb.

Mahan also finished as a runner-up with a 2-1 record in Flight D, where he defeated Steven Weaver of Presbyterian (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) and Mark Sokoloc of North Carolina Wesleyan (1-6, 6-2, 6-2) before falling in three sets to Bluefield College's Lochlan Kitchen (4-6, 6-2, 7-5) in the title match.

In doubles play, the tandem of Maddocks/Steve Lake finished fourth in Flight B with a 1-2 record while the duo of Eric Greene/Robert Jenkins also finished fourth in Flight C with an identical 1-2 mark.

The Mountaineers will spend the next two months preparing for their spring championship season, which begins on Jan. 17 at UNC Wilmington.
