Men's Soccer Ties Hartwick in First Sun Belt Match

ONEONTA, N.Y. – In its first Sun Belt Conference match, Appalachian State University men's soccer drew the Hartwick Hawks on Friday evening, 0-0 in two overtimes.

The Mountaineers (3-5-2, 0-0-1 Sun Belt) led in shots 13-10, but could not put one away. Paul West played the first half in goal for the Apps and made three saves. Holland Hammond relieved West and played the second half and both overtime periods, while also making three saves.

"Hartwick did a good job of making it difficult for us to play tonight," said head coach Matt Nelson. "They play their style and on this surface it is extremely effective. We worked extremely hard and found a way to get a result. After a mid-week game and a 10 and a half hour bus ride – I can't fault our work ethic. We can get better in this style of game, but I am happy with this result away from home."

The most legitimate scoring opportunity in the match came in the eighth minute when Hartwick's Kit Treager missed on a penalty kick high that ricocheted off the cross bar and over the net.

Stanley Broaden led the Mountaineers in shots with five, including two on goal. Patrick Harrow tallied two shots in the match.

App State had a tremendous opportunity to net the potential golden goal when Harrow got loose in the box, but the shot was blocked out of bounds.

Appalachian will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 when they host Jacksonville for a mid-week non-conference match. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m. from Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
