NOTING SATURDAY'S MATCHUP
• South Alabama represents the first NCAA Division I FBS opponent to visit Kidd Brewer Stadium since Appalachian State's former league, the Southern Conference, dropped to the Division I-AA (now Division I FCS) ranks in 1982.
• Appalachian State (1-3, 0-1 Sun Belt) is in search of its first Sun Belt victory after opening conference play last Thursday with a 34-14 setback at longtime rival Georgia Southern.
• South Alabama brings a 2-2 overall record to The Rock (1-1 Sun Belt). Like Appalachian, South Alabama opened league action with a loss to Georgia Southern (28-6 at USA on Sept. 20) but rebounded with a convincing 34-10 conference road win at Idaho last Saturday.
• Appalachian State is coming off a grueling stretch of two road games in six days. The Mountaineers dropped a heartbreaking 21-20 decision at Southern Miss on Sept. 20 before dropping its Sun Belt opener at Georgia Southern five days later.
• Appalachian traveled a total of 2,294 miles for the two-game, six-day stretch.
• However, beginning tonight, the Mountaineers play four of their next five games in the friendly confines of Kidd Brewer Stadium, where they have won 68 of their last 80 contests.
• South Alabama is on the back end of its own taxing two-game road stint. The Jaguars had to travel nearly 5,000 miles round trip for last Saturday's game at Idaho before making the 1,262-mile round trip to Boone this weekend.
• Redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Lamb is slated to make his first home start versus South Alabama. Lamb made his debut as a starter on Sept. 20 at Southern Miss and has accounted for 588 total yards (520 passing, 68 rushing) and three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) in his first two starts.
• Lamb faces a stout South Alabama defense that ranks second in the Sun Belt in points (21.5) and yards (370.0) allowed per game.
• South Alabama's football program is in only its sixth year of existence (USA first fielded a football team in 2009). In their first five seasons, the Jaguars have finished .500 or better four times, including a 6-6 (4-3 Sun Belt) campaign a year ago.
