NORTH CAROLINA A&T 24, NO. 21 APPALACHIAN STATE 21
SEPTEMBER 7, 2013 • BOONE, N.C. (KIDD BREWER STADIUM)
POSTGAME QUOTES
Appalachian State
Head Coach Scott Satterfield
Opening Statement:
“First of all give a lot of credit to North Carolina A&T. Defensively they obviously wanted to stop the run, when they stacked the box. Also give a lot of credit to their punter. He averaged 47 yards per punt pinning us inside the twenty yard line five times. It was really hard to get any momentum going off of our goal line for the majority of the game. Something that really stands out is the kickoff return they had for a touchdown and the pick six. Those are things you obviously can't give up to no matter who you play. You just can't give up those points if you want to win the game.”
Thoughts on the slow start offensively:
“We were trying to get in the game and establish the run. We wanted to get the running game going but their linebackers plugged up the middle. We waited too long to open things up. Later on in the game we opened it up with four wide sets and made plays out on the edge. That's where we needed to be, out on the edge, even with our runs and speed sweeps. We have to do a better job of taking what they were willing to give us.”
QB Kameron Bryant:
On fourth-quarter performance:
“We were able to get into a rhythm and they were playing us soft over the top and we were able to take what they gave us. The main thing was getting into a rhythm and unfortunately it took us most of the game to get to that point.”
LB Karl Anderson:
On defensive performance:
“I thought we played really well defensively. We only gave up twelve first downs, and 244 yards. There were opportunities on third down that we gave up that led to the touchdown in the first half and the field goal later on that ended up being the difference in the game. I thought we fought hard and tightened up some things in our base package that we struggled with last week. We just need to keep grinding and get back to work on Monday.”
On difficulty covering a mobile QB:
“Anytime you have a mobile quarterback it makes things difficult to cover when you can't get to him with a four man rush. It's difficult when it's something you don't see on a regular basis. So hopefully we can work on getting off our blocks and covering the back end. I thought we played well up front this week.”
North Carolina A&T
Head Coach Rod Broadway
Opening Statement:
"Well, it's a good win but all wins are good, and I'm especially proud of our coaching staff with the job they have done. Their preparation of getting our guys ready to play especially considering we didn't have spring ball, which is a miracle to me, to come up here and play against a program like App State. As you walk around this place they've won three national championships in eight years; eight, nine conference championships their last 10 years, and for us and our program to win the game is big and hopefully this will be the start of something good but the bottom line is it's still just one game. We've got to get better. We should have had the game a lot earlier. We gave up too many drives there at the end, so we got to get some things corrected especially clock management right there at the end. That's my fault so we'll get that fixed, but I'm proud of our coaching staff and our players."
On A&T's comeback:
"Well it's football. We made a play. They scored on kick off and we told the guys before the game started we got some guys back there that can make some plays given the opportunity. From that point on we settled in and played."
On the Final Minute of Play:
"Oh Lord. It's never easy. It shouldn't have been that hard. We should have ended the game. All we needed was one play, one tackle, one sac, one interception, but they wore us down a little bit. You have to play the way you condition. This was our first game and I knew it was going to suck. We weren't moving at the same speed in the fourth quarter as we did in the fourth quarter because we didn't have our legs and we weren't conditioned to play that fast be cause we hadn't played before, but hopefully next week we'll be in a little better game condition than we were today.”
On A&T's Running Game:
"All of our guys are back offensive line-wise. That's one of the things we've talked about as a staff and as a team because that's one of our most experienced groups. You've got to be able to run the ball. Now we've got to be able to make some passes and make a couple plays. Once we can do that, we've got a chance at being a decent football team."
On A&T's Point Cushion and Appalachian Coming Back:
"I was just hoping that we could make a play, and I made a big mistake there on offense. We got a penalty there on the goal line on first and goal or first and whatever it was down there and then we're out at first and 15. I thought they used a timeout when the guy's helmet came off. I wasn't aware of the timeout situation and thought they were dead, but they had twotimeouts left. That's my fault. I've got to be more aware of the game. I've just got to be a little more aware of the game situations.”
