Scott Satterfield – Head Coach
Opening Statement:
“First of all, it's been a really good spring. We're dealing with a lot of young players, especially on the defense. With the offense, we only have a couple of guys who have played. The guys did a great job throughout the spring. It's been some good competition. They've done some good things in the scrimmages. I'm pleased with the defensive staff with putting in a new scheme. Overall I'm really pleased. Today's game was about the kids having fun. It was more for them and I think they enjoyed the competition part of it. We're looking forward to the summer. We can't spend much time with them, per NCAA rules, so we have to lean on the seniors. We talked to them about leading this summer so when we start in August we'll be ready to go.
On getting to work with a full team:
“I can't wait. We've got 36 players coming this summer. I think some really good ones. I'm very excited to work with those guys this summer and Jamal (Londry-Jackson) is going to be healthy. Some of these guys that have really helped us to win football games are going to be out there, that we haven't been able to work with. They're going to help our tempo and they're going to help us make plays at every position once we get those guys healthy.”
On no touchdowns being scored:
“You got to score some touchdowns. I knew it was going to be low scoring. A couple teams got down toward the red zone and didn't get any points, which is disappointing. But at the same time, the quarterbacks weren't live and that hurts you. I don't get entirely concerned with it. In Wednesday's practice, the one team scored a lot of touchdowns.”
On finding the passion to win next season, despite not being eligible for the playoffs:
“These guys, its engrained in them to win. If we lined up to play right now, they would compete. You're talking about guys who are 22 and 23 and this is what they've been doing their whole life. They're not going to be able to turn it off because of an announcement. They're playing for us and we're playing to win the southern conference championship next year. They're goals are to win it all and that's how they're going to compete. We're going to approach it day by day. I don't care if you're a freshman or senior, that's how we're going to approach it. Was it disappointing to the seniors? Yes, but those guys came back from Easter and we're ready to go. We're going to make it special for those guys. We owe it to them after what they've done for this program for four or five years.”
Doug Middleton - DB (Gold Team)
On being back on the field after injury:
“It felt really good to be back. I am just blessed and thankful that I have made it to spring ball healthy. It felt really good to have the opportunity to be back on the field.”
On the defensive performance during the spring:
“All spring we've been doing really well. Of course without Jamal out there at quarterback the offense has been a little bit different but the transition between coaches on defense has gone very smoothly.”
Simms McElfresh - WR (Black Team)
On the perceived purpose of the spring game:
“We're a young team and this game opens up a lot for the younger guys to give them experience in more of a live game situation. This game gives them a taste for the season and what is to come.”
On the potential receiving corps:
“It's really great to have Sean Price, Malachi Jones, Bobo Beathard, Adrew Peacock and Tony Washington in this group. It's competitive every day because everyone wants to play. All throughout practices and the season we are all battling, battling, battling and it really just makes everyone better and we are getting better as a group. We are a pretty tight group and we love to see each other succeed. So, we will be a pretty good receiving corps.”
