ELON, N.C. — In a tightly played contest, Appalachian State women's tennis was unable to edge instate foe Elon, as the Mountaineers fell just shy in a 4-3 defeat on Thursday afternoon at Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The match on started out with the Phoenix (18-3, 8-2 SoCon) grabbing the team point after sweeping doubles with a pair of 8-1 wins at the No. 1 and 3 slots, along with an 8-4 score at No. 2.
Elon quickly moved ahead, 3-0, after posting straight-set 6-2 and 6-1 victories in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
Senior Ellie Linsell posted the Mountaineers' (13-8, 5-4 SoCon) first point of the afternoon when she picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles.
At No. 5, Jessica Thaggard defeated Barbora Lazarova, 6-4. 6-3.
Gabriela Celi followed suit in a three-set tiebreak against Maria Camara Ruiz (4-6, 6-3, 10-6) for a No. 6 triumph, but the Phoenix returned with a 6-1, 7-5 score at No. 4 to seal their 4-3 victory.
The Mountaineers return home to close out the regular season against Wofford on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m.
