Masamvu Places First at Benbow Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Rumbidzai Masamvu won a playoff against IUPUI's Lauren Kuss and Butler's Jenna Peters to capture medalist honors at the Benbow Invitational on Tuesday, as Appalachian State University women's golf finished tied with Cleveland State for second place at Jacksonville Beach Golf Course.

Masamvu closed out the two-day tournament with a 79-76=155 (+11), leading Appalachian to a runner-up finish, their best position since capturing the Winthrop Intercollegiate in the fall. The Apps carded a 327-318=645 for the tournament, as senior Yue Xu closely followed Masamvu with a 77-81=158 (+14) and tying for fifth-place.

Seniors Lauren Smith and Mimi Burke tied for 19th and 24th, respectively, as sophomore Haley Zagoria rounded out the Mountaineer lineup with an 85-86=171 (+27) and tying for 31st with Mountaineer freshman Lily Yatawara who played as an individual.

The Mountaineers return to action Sunday, March 17 in Ocala, Fla. for the Morehead State Ocala Spring Invitational. This year's tournament will be at Juliette Falls Golf Resort.
