Men's Soccer Drops OT Match to Davidson, 2-1

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Appalachian State University men's soccer dropped a tough match at Davidson in what was its final Southern Conference game of the season. With the loss the Mountaineers will be the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament.

The Mountaineers (3-7-6, 1-4-1) were able to get on the board first. In the 50th minute of the game Matthew Melton sent a beauty of a cross from the far side to the back post where Stephen Chapman was able to put his head on his fourth goal of the season getting it past Matt Pacifici for the 1-0 advantage. Pacifici made two saves on the night for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats (8-9-1, 2-4-0) leveled the game in the 55th minute when Jake Keator struck one from 25-yards out on a shanked kick that got past Danny Free to the far post. Free made two saves on the night for the Mountaineers.

The game would head into overtime deadlocked at 1-1 when Valeriy Sviderskiy received a cross into the box from Shane Macnamara and sent a sliding shot into the net for the game-winner.

Despite the outcome, Appalachian led Davidson in shots 11 to nine and garnered the majority of the scoring chances with near misses from Stanley Broaden and Mason McCarter. The defense for App State play extremely calm as well in pressure situations. Harrison Delbridge, Patrick Harrow, Kojo Thompson and Jordan Melia snuffed out a number of Wildcat opportunities on the attack and in the box.

App State will host its Senior Night on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Longwood. The Mountaineers play its first round game next Saturday on the road against the No. 2 seed in the tournament with the first seed receiving a bye for round one.
