WILMINGTON, N.C.
- Appalachian
State University men's soccer dropped its second match of the season, as the
Mountaineers could not keep up with Saint Mary's, falling 2-0 Sunday afternoon
on the final day of the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Classic at the UNCW Soccer
Field.
With
the loss, the Apps fall to 4-2-1 on the season, as Saint Mary moves to 3-1-2.
The
Gaels started quickly in the opening half, striking first in the 21st
minute. SMC's Justin Howard fired a seven-yard shot past Appalachian goalkeeper
Danny Free to grab the lead. Tariq Adam and Michael Semenza were credited with
the assist on the goal.
After
the goal, App State fired two shots on goal, but could not find the back of the
net and went into halftime down, 1-0. The Apps outshot the Gaels in the first
half 5-2.
Saint
Mary's got an insurance goal when the Mountaineers gave up an own goal in the
81st minute. The Gaels' defense closed out the match, not giving the
Apps many opportunities after the final goal.
Free
finished the match with two saves, both stops coming in the second half.
Sophomore Stanley Broaden and freshman Ewahia Amhanesi both record shots on
goal.
For their efforts, sophomore Patrick Harrow and senior Lee Williams were named to the all-tournament team.
The
Mountaineers will continue their road trip as they head to Wake Forest on
Tuesday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
