BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's soccer
ended its preseason on a high note, defeating VMI 4-0 Monday afternoon at the
Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
With the victory, the
Mountaineers spilt their two preseason matches and will turn their attention
towards the regular-season opener at home against East Tennessee State on
Friday, Aug. 24.
Appalachian got on
the scoreboard in the 21st minute when freshman Ewahia Amhanesi
headed in a cross from sophomore Patrick Harrow. For Amhanesi, it was his
second goal of the preseason.
The Mountaineers went
into the half with a 1-0 score, out shooting the Keydets 9-4.
Senior David Dodge
got on the scoring sheet in the 52nd minute when he headed a cross
from freshman Alex Herbst. Eight minutes later Hermann Watch List defender Lee Williams tallied his first goal of the preseason thanks to an assist from Dodge.
Dodge tallied his
second goal for the match on a free kick in the 67th minute, giving
the Mountaineers a 4-0 lead, a margin they would hold for the rest of the
match.
App State outshot the
Keydets 15-9 for the match, and eight were on goal. Junior Danny Free started
the match in goal for the Apps, grabbing one save.
ASU will shift its
focus to the regular season, as the Mountaineers and ETSU will meet for the
tenth time in the series. Kickoff for that match is set for 7 p.m.
