BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University softball dropped its second-round game of the Southern Conference tournament to top-seeded Georgia Southern, 6-0, Thursday night at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
The SoCon Pitcher of the Year, Sarah Purvis shut down the Mountaineers (22-24) right from the get go as she only gave up one hit in six innings. She walked three Appalachian batters and fanned eight.
ASU's Caitlin Wainright entered the game having held the Eagles scoreless for 11.2 innings this season. The senior from Greenville, N.C. kept GSU at bay for 3.1 innings with four strike outs.
In the fourth inning, GSU's Kourtny Thomas broke the scoreless contest with a one-out two-run home run to right center.
Georgia Southern recorded four-consecutive hits, which included a three run homer to take a 6-0 lead in the sixth inning.
The Mountaineers' lone hit came in the sixth by junior Meghan Smith as the Eagles out-hit the Apps 11-1.
Appalachian State moves to the consolation bracket for an elimination game against Elon at noon on Friday. If the Mountaineers defeat the Phoenix they will face the winner of College of Charleston and UNCG at 5 p.m. on Friday.
