BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis is
set for its final two matches of the regular season, as the Mountaineers host
Southern Conference opponents Furman and College of Charleston to close out the
year. The Apps host the Paladins at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday before taking on the
Cougars at 2:30 p.m. on Friday; both matches will be held at ASU Tennis Courts.
Appalachian State (13-6, 6-2 SoCon) has won seven of its
last eight matches and is 6-0 at home this year. The Apps have clinched at least
fourth-place in the final SoCon standings and have clinched one of five
first-round byes in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament.
Four seniors will play in their final regular season matches
this week. Alex Markov represents ASU in the No. 1 singles spot for the second
straight year and has teamed with Alain Humblet to go 13-2 at No. 2 doubles
this season. With a team-high 14 wins, Humblet is the reigning SoCon Player of
the Week and has won his last 10 matches, dating back to March 16.
Senior Philip Kloc is 13-5 in the No. 2 singles spot this
year and has won eight of his last 10 matches, while Steve Karendal shares the
team lead of 14 wins, posting a 14-4 mark in No. 5 singles with a 7-0 combined
mark in doubles action.
Furman (8-13, 5-3 SoCon) began the season on a six-match
slide but has won four of its last five matches entering the week. The
Paladins' losses include four to nationally-ranked squads, while Furman has
tabbed wins over Chattanooga, Georgia Southern, Davidson, Elon and The Citadel.
Individually, Tyler Droll enters the week on the team's
hottest streak, having won his last six and nine of his last 10 matches,
playing mostly at No. 6 singles. Furman's No. 1, Andrew Mellow, is 10-10 on the
year and an even 5-5 in the last 30 days. In doubles, the two have combined for
a team-leading 7-1 record in the No. 2 pairs position.
College of Charleston (14-3, 8-0 SoCon) remains perfect in
league play but not without a few near-misses. Samford, UNCG and Georgia
Southern came within one point of taking their respective matches, as the
Cougars escaped 4-3 in each case. CofC's only losses this season have been to
nationally-ranked squads: Clemson, Georgia State and South Carolina.
Cougars Crescente Lesser and Alon Faiman enter the week with
seven-match winning streaks at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Both are
9-1 in their last ten matches and 8-0 in conference action. Kyle Parker and
Mickael Trintignac make up CofC's top doubles pair; with a 14-2 record, the duo
has only lost in matches against Wofford and Samford, both by 6-8 margins.
After Friday, the Mountaineers rest up for next week's
Southern Conference Tournament, April 19-22, hosted by College of Charleston
and The Citadel. ASU will play its first match in Friday's quarterfinal round at
CofC.
